A number of well-known vehicles were left off the list when BMW unveiled its carryover and minor upgrade models for 2023, hinting at the presence of more major updates. The machines R 1250 R and R 1250 RS were AWOL.

BMW has already type-approved new models for 2023 to offer us an idea as to what to expect when the bikes are formally launched later this year.

Although the  BMW R 1250 RS and BMW R 1250 R are being improved, there doesn't appear to be any significant changes in the works. The 2023 models will use the powertrains from the current variants, which were both delivered concurrently in late 2018 as bikes for the 2019 model year, according to the type-approval papers.

Their shifting relative sizes suggest visual corrections. More major alterations might arise from changes to the electronics, which aren't revealed in the certifications. Notably, the bikes' models have been modified. Since their introduction in 2018, the current bikes have utilised the internal codes OJ71 for the R 1250 R and OJ81 for the BMW R 1250 RS. For the 2023 models, these codes become OM71 and OM81, respectively.

The 1,254cc ShiftCam boxer-twin engine that drives both models in 2023 will remain the same. It continues to produce 134 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and torque that peaks at 105 lb.-ft at 6,250 rpm Both models' catalytic converters have undergone some significant alterations, which shows that the performance of the emissions has improved.

The move is most likely a result of the second phase of the Euro 5 emissions rules, which will be put into effect in European markets between 2024 and 2025. Through the implementation of standardised OBD-II diagnostics, these standards will prevent the performance of catalytic converters from degrading over time. There are clues that the bikes' appearance may change in 2023, although neither model is likely to undergo any significant visual changes. Notably, the 2023 BMW R 1250 RS's proportions have changed slightly for 2023; despite maintaining the same wheelbase as the current model, it is overall a little bit shorter, signalling a change to the licence plate bracket at the back.

The fact that it is also slightly taller than the existing model suggests that the windshield's shape has changed. The bare R 1250 R's proportions don't change, but the fact that it wasn't unveiled alongside other carryover models suggests that it will have a unique aesthetic beyond simple colour options.
