BMW introduced the BMW M1000RR, the first motorbike to carry the high-performance M name, over two years ago. But after we revealed that BMW had trademarked the name together with "M 1000 XR" and "M 1300 GS," we knew it wouldn't be the first. We didn't anticipate the upcoming M-branded motorbike to be built around the BMW S1000R.

That now appears to be the case as a new M 1000 R model has been seen in German and Swiss vehicle certification paperwork. The same documents also show that BMW will release an updated S 1000 RR with a new engine in addition to the M 1000 RR. The M 1000 R and S 1000 RR are both listed in the Swiss paper as producing 206.5 horsepower @ 13,750 rpm. This is an improvement over the present S 1000 RR's claimed 204 hp at 13,500 rpm and a significant increase over the S 1000 R's claimed 162 hp at 11,000 rpm, albeit it is not quite on par with the M 1000 RR reported 209 hp at 14,500 rpm.

The maximum torque is 83.3 lb-ft @ 11,000 rpm. With a difference from the S 1000 R's 84 lb-ft at 9,250 rpm, that is the same as the current S 1000 RR. This implies that the 999cc engine of the M 1000 R will have the same tuning as the S 1000 RR and not the more street-friendly tuning of the present S 1000 R. Additionally, it implies that BMW's ShiftCam variable valve timing system will be used in the M model.

The M bike shows greater values for carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and nitrogen oxide emissions, indicating a different exhaust system, which should not be surprising for a M model, even though the peak output is the same for the M 1000 R and S 1000 RR.

The new S 1000 RR's final drive ratio and 57.3-inch wheelbase are identical to those of the M 1000 RR, which was accomplished by using a longer chain and replacing the 45-tooth rear sprocket on the present S 1000 RR with a 46-tooth one. The M 1000 R features an even longer wheelbase at 57.9 inches, a gain of 0.2 inches over the BMW S1000R, and its final drive ratio suggests a 47-tooth sprocket. The M 1000 R, like the M 1000 RR, is described in the Swiss document as having a 200/55 ZR 17 rear tyre. However, the S 1000 RR continues to use the 190/55 ZR 17 tyre.

In recent years, BMW has stayed away from the main international motorcycle events, but it is anticipated to be present at Intermot in October. We anticipate the announcement of the M 1000 R and S 1000 RR in the coming weeks, and at least one of them will be present at the Cologne show.
