More than 800,000 hybrids were sold in the U.S. last year, a record for a single year.

Hybrid vehicles combine an internal combustion engine (or, rarely, diesel) with an electric motor powered by a battery pack. Combined, such powertrains allow vehicles to solely run on electric power at relatively low loads, resulting in zero tailpipe emissions.

There are also plug-in hybrid models with larger battery packs that can be charged at home or at public chargers. Before the gas engine kicks in, these models offer anywhere from around a dozen to upwards of 50 miles of electric range.

Hybrids don't need to be charged, unlike fully electric vehicles. Drivers can fill their gas tanks at any gas station.

In 2021, Toyota was by far the largest hybrid player. Approximately 584,000 electrified models were sold by the automaker, including a few fuel-cell vehicles. Here are the top five Toyota hybrid models from last year:

Sales of electric cars grew at a faster rate than those of all automakers last year, but still have a long way to go with around 435,000 cars delivered. Browse hybrid cars for sale.
