Honda confirmed Thursday that a new version of its HR-V subcompact SUV would debut soon, but provided few details other than sketches.

The renderings reveal an HR-V that looks more like an SUV than the current model, which is more like a tall hatchback. The front of the car features an octagonal grille flanked by large side intakes. Huge wheels fill arches with subtle flares. The side mirrors have been moved into the door sheet metal, which generally opens up better visibility from the outside.

The new HR-V appears to have a more formal, conventional roofline than the current model's sloping profile. As a result, the HR-V would look more like a downsized Honda CR-V than a Mazda CX-30.

A rear-end shot shows a chunky D-pillar and high-mounted taillights.

Honda's current HR-V has been around since the 2016 model year, which makes it an ancient design for a subcompact SUV. A new update for the 2019 model year brings active safety technology and refreshed styling. At that time, Honda discontinued the manual transmission option. Eventually, the HR-V replaced the Fit hatchback in the Honda lineup.

A hybrid HR-V is sold in select global markets, but Honda hasn't mentioned electrification. You can buy Honda HR-Vs here.
