The changed seating position also affects the high-speed stability. This meant that the previous BMW S 1000 R had a problem on undulating motorways from around 240 km / h if someone insisted on driving that fast for a long time. The successor is a bit fuller, but symptoms of strong aerodynamic relief of the front end are also noticeable with it at high speed.

The fork only responds stubbornly when driving over bumps, and the driver hanging in the wind usually causes the steering impulses himself, which cause oscillation around the longitudinal and vertical axis. Despite a slight improvement, the fact remains that motorcycles with no fairing are not the most suitable for such journeys.
Engine, chassis, electronics - everything is new with the R from year of birth 2021. The comparison teaches a lot about the effect of lighter wheels and new tires as well as the gain in comfort through longer geared gears and clear displays.

Usually it is difficult or impossible to get a previous comparison motorcycle for such a test, but this time we were lucky and received an almost dewy "old" copy of the BMW S 1000 R from the BMW dealer Brauneisen from Wendlingen, which is not yet 4,000 Kilometers on the speedometer. However, like most previous test machines, this machine was equipped with standard wheels, while the new R rolled on super-light carbon wheels. The difference is almost four kilograms in total, and a good part of the weight saving is likely to be made relatively far outside, where it is particularly effective in reducing the wheels' moments of inertia.

Different wheels, same test tires

It was therefore not possible to determine what part of the brilliant maneuverability of the new BMW S 1000 R is due to the light wheels and what part is due to the new chassis with a longer wheelbase, but a steeper steering head angle and shorter caster. Only one thing is certain: if you want to buy an S 1000 R, regardless of whether it is an older or a newer type, you would do well to spend as much as you can on lightweight bikes. There are forged wheels for both types that are between the standard and carbon wheels in terms of price and weight.

During the photo drives, the 2019 machine was still equipped with mixed Bridgestone tires; for the actual test drives, like the 2021, it was placed on Pirelli's Rosso Corsa II. But despite the now identical tires, the new BMW S 1000 R turns much more easily and holds the tight line when accelerating in an inclined position, while the red predecessor is noticeably pushing towards the exit of the bend. Due to the short blink of an eye, which you need less time on the new one to tilt it, you adopt a rounder and more fluid driving style, steer a bit later and with a little more speed. Everything seems carefree. It is also easier to do

More front-wheel-oriented seating position

The new BMW S 1000 R has a clearly sportier profile thanks to the changed driver seating position. The handlebar ends are at the same height as the previous model, but the new, only slightly cranked handlebars ensure a more front-wheel-oriented seating position. Like the S 1000 RR from which it is derived, the new R also has a narrower waist; Without sacrificing comfort, it gives the rider better opportunities to move around on the motorcycle, and this is particularly beneficial when you take it a little faster on winding roads.
