The Drive Pilot System is activated on the steering wheel

The controls necessary for this are located in the rim of the steering wheel, on the left and right, above the thumb holes.

With the Drive Pilot, the driver can divert his attention from the road to concentrate on another activity.

Mercedes strengthens its sensor system

The vehicles will be equipped with LiDAR (distance sensor), a camera in the rear window, microphones and a humidity sensor at the wheels.

In the race for vehicle autonomy, Mercedes has just scored an important point by receiving the right to use a level 3 autonomous driving system internationally.

Mercedes' Drive Pilot autonomous driving system has just been approved by the UN-R157 standard . This is the first time that an automaker has been allowed to use an autonomous system for its Level 3 vehicles internationally

The drivers of a Mercedes will nevertheless have to comply with the rules of the different countries to use it. In most states, there is not yet a legal framework regarding this type of vehicle. In Germany, from 2022 , some will already be able to drive without their hands on the wheel under certain conditions. The system can only be used on 13,191 km of defined motorway, when the traffic is dense and up to a speed of 60 km / h maximum.

WATCHING A MOVIE OR SHOPPING WHILE DRIVING

With the Drive Pilot , the driver can divert his attention from the road to concentrate on another activity . He could, for example, watch a film on the central screen of his vehicle's dashboard or make his purchases online. When the system is disabled , these features are blocked for security reasons. Mercedes has so far announced two models compatible with this technology: S class and EQS . The Drive Pilot will be available as an option .

MERCEDES STRENGTHENS ITS SENSOR SYSTEM

To allow autonomous driving in the best conditions, the German manufacturer has revised upwards the equipment of its vehicles. They will be equipped with LiDAR (distance sensor), a camera in the rear window, microphones and a humidity sensor at the wheels. The navigation system is updated regularly and is correlated with data from a high definition map.

The safety system has also been redesigned for autonomous driving. In the event of an alert, if the driver does not regain control, the vehicle will automatically slow down as smoothly as possible and turn on its hazard warning lights. The window and door system unlocks when stationary and a distress signal is sent by the vehicle. Be careful though; a level 3 range does not allow the driver to be completely free . He must be able to take control of the vehicle at any time.
