MotoGP and World Superbike's tech-laden platform has been updated almost yearly to create a more approachable machine. The 2022 Ducati Panigale V4 and V4 S take the mission of creating a friendlier superbike to heart, tweaking nearly every aspect of Bologna bullets, making them the most powerful and welcoming versions yet.


For 2022, Ducati engineers improved the Panigale V4 S by refining its aerodynamics, updating chassis geometry, improving gearbox ratios, adjusting suspension setup, and improving rider aids. Ducati insiders claim this all adds up to a massively powerful motorcycle deftly handled by both mortals and pros alike.

As I packed my bags and headed to Spain's famed Circuito de Jerez - Arengel Nieto, I was curious if rumors of a kinder 2022 Ducati Panigale V4 S were true. Despite being a superbike through and through, I found it easier to ride in wet, mixed, and dry conditions. Now for the Fast Facts.


1)  A work of art is the 1103cc Desmosedici Stradale 90-degree V4 engine. Due to its lusty twin-pulse ignition and gyroscopic force-defying counter-rotating crankshaft, Ducati's V4 engine has earned its accolades since its introduction. Meanwhile, the 216 horsepower at 13,000 rpm and 91 ft-lbs of torque at 9500 rpm (euro spec) grab you by the scruff and propel you off any apex without hesitation. One of Ducati's greatest tricks is making those jaw-dropping power numbers seem approachable. You can control its magnificent power more easily with its artful torque strategies and genuinely spot-on fueling.

2) Performance increases with subtle changes. With an updated oil pump and oil circuits, parasitic power loss has been reduced, allowing for better quick-revving. The exhaust outlets have been enlarged by 18 percent to reduce backpressure. The result is an additional 1.5 horsepower.


3) According to EPA noise emission regulations, the North American Panigale V4 produces 210 horsepower at 12,500 rpm and 90.6 ft-lbs of torque at 11,000 rpm. Noise regulations have a negative impact on peak power numbers for high-performance motorcycles in the U.S. Not all superbikes are immune to this issue, and it's a case-by-case scenario as to how to handle it. To Ducati's credit, the emissions hit barely affected the spec sheet.

4) I rode European-spec bikes at Jerez. We're talking over 200 horsepower at the crank, so a few missing ponies from the V4 coral won't be noticed. Ducati already offers a titanium exhaust system by Akrapovi* that will save you 11 pounds and give you 228 horsepower and 105 dB (102dB with baffle).

5) WSBK-derived gearbox ratios smooth out the whole thing. Ducati borrowed from its WSBK playbook, opting for taller 1st, 2nd, and 6th gears in its full-blown race transmissions. First is 11.6 percent longer, eliminating some of the Panigale's rage in tight hairpin corners and making acceleration smoother. Second gear is 5.6 percent longer, making it closer to the first and third gears, smoothing the transition between them. Combined with the immaculate up/down quickshifter, banging through the gearbox is an absolute treat.


6) At the flick of a switch, new and revised power modes change the Panigale's personality. There are four power modes available: Full, High, Medium, and Low. Moreover, there are four fully customizable riding modes: Race A, Race B, Sport, and Street. Each power mode has excellent throttle response.

7) In each power mode, torque is delivered differently, and the progressive steps in performance make the package manageable. In tricky conditions, Low reduces peak power to 150 horsepower. Both Medium and High now feature dedicated torque maps for every gear - a feature borrowed from Ducati's MotoGP program - and both wick it up to suitably sporty levels. Nonetheless, the no-holds-barred Full mode unchains the V4, except in first gear. If you're looking for the best performance, you'll need to bring your A-game. High mode gave me everything I wanted in the dry.
