After a fall, the endurance test of the Moto Guzzi V85 was canceled prematurely. It continues with a new machine. Again the goal is to reach 50,000 kilometers. Will it work in 2022?

First contact at kilometer 3,243

Colleague Jens Kratschmar grabbed the Guzzi shortly after leaving for a long weekend in autumn. His impressions:


Engine:

The Guzzi twin with its 853 cubic meters clearly shows the end of the concept of air-cooled engines in its Euro 5 vote. Especially when the drive flirts with basically charming top values: 76 hp at 7,500 tours and 82 Nm at 5,000 rpm are good. But unfortunately the twin only perks up from 3,000. Beneath it he yawns along the tachometer. After all, smoothness and willingness to run go hand in hand, which is the greatest compliment for the lower half of the speed. From 4,000 rpm the machine comes to life, the Guzzi develops useful power, breathes wonderfully audibly and courageously pulls away with an incredibly well-tuned sound. By the way: The motor already runs "dynamically" in the mapping. What should go even less there? I fear bad things.



Landing gear:

The spring elements, which seem sturdy in themselves, have to go through a lot and are then only bargain. With a driver over 120 kilos in gear, the springs reach the limit and can no longer hide the lack of damping. Problem in the context of the long-term tester: The front and rear tension is almost at its maximum, so the V85 bumps quite unattractively over short impacts. Once in motion and with long impacts, the spring and cushioning work well. Nevertheless: In fast corners with load changes in an inclined position, 


it feels as if the front wheel and rear wheel want different things. Memories of Japanese folding hinge chassis from the 1970s come to mind. Currently fitted: OE Michelin Anakee Adventure tires. Fine autumn gum, Even with below 10 degrees and damp morning streets from meters one confidently and gives a lot of confidence. Front tires on the TT clearly overhanded with a slight tendency to tilt when the lean angles are higher or the steering angle becomes more acute. Nevertheless: The tire makes the Guzzi legs.


Ergonomics and comfort

Here the Guzzi gets points. At 1.88 meters, the chronicler sits superbly on the V85. The thin-looking bench has long-distance qualities, footrests fit well and once you get used to the high handlebars, you will appreciate it. It loses points in operation: the instrument is playful and overloaded. Functional switch, but with a muddy pressure point and in the dark only to be found on suspicion. The switch of the grip heating, which is very weak in itself, cannot be reached without hand from the handlebars. Top light, even the daytime running lights shine outstandingly in the dark. Dipped headlights impeccable. Spotlights: stadium floodlights.


Haptics and optics

Guzzi did a really good job there. To a large extent, it all looks very high quality and well designed. On the thick tubes of the frame and auxiliary structures, the paint appears to be an inch thick. Very fine. Unfortunately, the factory-fitted case system is not, as it is too small. The key is made clumsily and visually it is very difficult to distinguish it from the ignition key, as it is the same shape and color. And if you want to open your suitcase with the wrong key without patience, you run the risk of at least bending the ignition key.


For 8,500 euros you can't expect more motorcycle, unfortunately the Moto Guzzi V85 TT in the Evocative paintwork costs 12,590 euros. There has to be more than a name and a nimbus for the coal.
