There was speculation about it for a long time, but now it is clear: The Italian luxury forge is bringing two adventure bikes with 550 and 950 cc as two- and three-cylinder. Both can be pre-ordered from November 23rd.

MV Agusta boss Timur Sardarov has been planning to expand his premium brand for a long time. Again and again there was speculation about the expansion of the Italian portfolio into the popular adventure bike segment. Attentive observers had spotted an Erlkönig in the run-up to the EICMA near the MV Agusta plant in Schiranna. The prototype was clearly recognizable as MV Agusta .


Then the manufacturer made an official statement. MV Agusta will launch two adventure bikes under the Lucky Explorer Project title, which clearly bear the spirit of the legendary Paris-Dakar machines. Both will be available for pre-order from November 23, 2021. MV boss Timur Sardarov explains that a whole Lucky Explorer adventure world will be created around the motorcycles.

The two Lucky Explorer models are a 550 with a two-cylinder engine, which will be taken over by the Chinese manufacturer and Benelli parent company QJ Motor, and a 950 three-cylinder variant, which is based on the new MV Agusta-Drilling . MV Agusta has simply called both models 5.5 and 9.5 so far.


MV Agusta Lucky Explorer 9.5

The 9.5 relies on a double loop frame made of pressed and forged steel elements. The screwed rear frame is also made of this material. The swing arm and fork bridges are made of aluminum. The 9.5 rolls on a 21-inch wheel at the front and an 18-inch wheel at the rear, which underlines the off-road ambitions. The wheelbase is specified at 1,580 millimeters. In the cockpit, a 7-inch TFT display connects to mobile devices via Bluetooth and of course also uses it to display navigation. A carrier system is inconspicuously integrated at the rear, to which suitcases can dock.

The new 57 kilogram three-cylinder engine, which is only based on the 800 triple, has a displacement of 930 cm³, two overhead camshafts, forged aluminum pistons, a cassette gear and with a compression of 12.5: 1 offers a whopping 123 hp 10,000 tours and a maximum torque of 102 Nm at 7,000 rpm. The counter-rotating crankshaft relies on a crank pin offset of 120 degrees. An automatic gearshift assists with quick gear changes. The hydraulically operated clutch is optionally available as a Rekluse version. In terms of design, the 9.5 remains very close to the Cagiva Elefant. Bremspower supplies a radially hinged Brembo double disc brake system.


MV Agusta Lucky Explorer 5.5

The Lucky Explorer 5.5 was developed by MV Agusta in close cooperation with its Chinese partner QJ Motor. It is practically the sister model to the Benelli TRK 502. The mid-range bike relies on a 550 cm³ in-line twin cylinder from QJ, which has been adapted for use at MV Agusta in terms of injection and displacement (+ 50 cc). MV also seems to take over the frame from Benelli, but the rear swing arm has been redrawn. Otherwise, the 550 adapts the equipment of the TRK 502. A 19-inch spoked wheel turns at the front and a 17-inch wheel at the rear. The Brembo double disc brake system decelerates. In terms of design, the 5.5 also emulates the old Cagiva Elefant. The rounded, towering cladding has a double round headlight, a high pane and a decoration in the Lucky Explorer design. An engine guard protects the two-cylinder. A TFT display in the cockpit provides information.


The historical reference to Lucky Explorer is derived from the Cagiva Elefant, which at the time was equipped with a Ducati V2 when Cagiva took off. The brand was later assigned to the manufacturer MV Agusta. And: At the recently held Sardinia Swank Rally, a team with old Cagiva elephant models competed under the Lucky Explorer logo. Led by the Marketing Director of MV Agusta.

MV Agusta is entering the adventure bike segment with two models. The 5.5 is an upgraded Benelli TRK 502, the 9.5 a completely new development around the new three-cylinder. Both optically emulate the legendary Cagiva Elefant. At EICMA 2021 there are already near-series prototypes to be seen.
