All new 2022 Aprilia Tuareg 660 finally launched Full details The Aprilia Tuareg 660 completes the range with the lively 660 series twin. She has already been able to ride MOTORRAD - a bike with a lot of character.

After the fully clad, stubby armored RS 660 and its tube-steered, more or less naked sister Tuono, which both came onto the market in early 2021, Aprilia has now knitted a veritable travel enduro around the lively 660 twin with the Tuareg 660. And while the Tuono and RS have many identical parts, the Tuareg is an independent development. This can already be seen in the frame. Instead of a bridge made of cast aluminum, the Tuareg has steel lattice tubing.

Tuareg significantly quieter than RS and Tuono

The Twin, which was also intended for this purpose from the start of construction, differs in a few details from its "Tarmac-only" siblings. For example, the first gear for trial insoles was translated to be shorter. Camshafts with tamer timing provide more fullness at the bottom and in the middle, but this comes at the expense of top performance. But with 80 PS at 9,250 / min (RS 100 PS / 10,500 / min, Tuono 95 PS / 10,500 / min) one is still sufficiently motorized. Especially since a shorter secondary gear ratio (15/42 instead of 17/43) helps to level out the lack of torque that has been criticized up to now. In addition, the Aprilia Tuareg 660 is significantly quieter than the RS and Tuono (96/99 dB (A)) with a standing noise of 90 dB (A). But now enough of the gray theory and get on your bike. Whereby it is hardly possible When driving the Tuareg, you don't have to constantly make cross-comparisons with the Yamaha Ténéré 700. With its radically reduced and off-road-oriented concept, it has created its own very successful class. Which the Tuareg now intends to penetrate with power.

Before you start, you first have to climb the airy seat height of 860 millimeters. On the one hand, this is due to the long spring travel of 240 millimeters from the front and back, but thanks to the narrow waist of the surprisingly comfortable bench, even non-giants can safely reach the ground. For comparison, the Yamaha Ténéré: 880/210/200 / board. The wide aluminum handlebar of the Aprilia Tuareg 660 is easy to use when driving while sitting or standing.

Aprilia Tuareg 660 with 4 mappings

Basically, the driver has the choice between four mappings, whereby "Urban" and "Explore" are fixed. In "Offroad" and "Individual", the response behavior and engine braking torque can be set three times, traction control four times and the ABS intervention threshold twice, and ABS in off-road mode can be deactivated not only at the rear but also at the front. During the first driving appointment there was no possibility to deal with the electronics in more detail, but as some driving pictures show, the Aprilia Tuareg 660 can do quite a lot of drifts with the off-road standard setting. There was also no time to take a closer look at the fully adjustable chassis at the front and rear. The basic setting is quite tight and after the morning cold start it takes a few kilometers until the response behavior is in the green area as the damper oil heats up. In the meantime, the twin with the 270-degree crankshaft, which is almost mandatory today, has also reached its operating temperature. The clutch, operated by a cable and two fingers on the fixed lever, is only needed on the test bike to start, because it has the Quickshifter / Blibber combination on board, which costs around 200 euros.

Twin prefers to turn than pull

The Twin itself is a rather rough fellow, it runs quite rough and cannot hide the fact that despite the modifications it prefers turning rather than pulling. It can withstand the sixth from 2,000 rpm, under load it should be better 3,000 rpm. It really comes to life from 5,000 / min and with vigorous roaring from the airbox it then turns quickly towards 10,000 / min. Moved quickly, the setup fits like a fist on the eye. In spite of the long suspension travel, there is nothing, the Aprilia Tuareg 660 willingly follows the steering impulses, falls agile in leaning position and remains neutral when braking into corners. On the other hand, the straight-line stability is flawless, at least at the speeds up to around 140 km / h.

You quickly forget that the mounted Pirelli Scorpion STR ultimately belong to the category of studded tires. Because the possible lean angles and cornering speeds are considerable, they announce the end of their possibilities with scratching. But when braking at the latest, it becomes clear that pure road rubbers are able to transmit significantly higher forces. But on gravel roads or similar unpaved surfaces, Pirellis and Tuaregs are back on top form. You let it run with great confidence in the front wheel and steer the Aprilia easily with the rear wheel thanks to the short gear ratio and the easy-turning twin. But you shouldn't overdo it, because the officially stated 204 kilograms are and remain 204 kilograms. Nevertheless, this value is great, said Ténéré weighs 207 kilograms,

Is there nothing to complain about?

At least nothing dramatic. The plastic fuel filler cap of the Aprilia Tuareg 660 cannot be folded down, just put on. It would also be nice if the stickers were painted over and the engine protection was made more robust. And the pleasantly calm windshield adjustable.

Prices and colors

Incidentally, the Aprilia Tuareg 660 is to be officially presented at EICMA 2021. Aprilia will communicate the prices even before the premiere. In the two basic versions, Gold Acid and Red Martian, the Enduro costs 11,990 euros. In the Dakar color scheme Indigo Tagelmust, it costs from 12,690 euros. The Tuareg will probably go on sale as a 2022 model at the end of 2021.

CONCLUSION

After the first driving impression, you can't help but say: Hats off to the Aprilia engineers. Although the drive is largely identical to the RS and Tuono 660, it has its own character. The chassis works great on asphalt and gravel. With its lavish electronic equipment, the Aprilia Tuareg 660 is interesting for all those for whom a Ténéré 700 is too puristic.
