Ducati will become a electric motorcycle supplier by 2023,
The company announced that it will be the official motorcycle supplier of the FIM MotoE World Cup, the all-electric racing class included at select rounds of the MotoGP World Championship. The partnership will begin with the 2023 racing season and last until 2026. During a press conference held at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, Ducati Motor Holding CEO Claudio Domenicali and Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta made the announcement and provided comments.

Ducati's involvement in the MotoE class comes shortly after it was announced that Italian electric bike manufacturer Energica will not be extending its contract as the MotoE championship's official motorcycle supplier after 2022.

When the MotoE racing series began in 2019, Energica was considered a natural fit. The company makes high-performance electric motorcycles. The Energica Ego CorEnergica Ego Corsa, the racebike used by all MotoE teams, is based directly on Energica Ego, the street-legal electric superbike.

Energica Motor Company CEO Livia Cevolini said two days ago that the company is extremely happy to have made MotoE the success it is today. "We're confident our initiative and efforts have generated plenty of interest from the big OEMs to follow the path we set a decade ago. As pioneers of electric mobility on two wheels, we have opened up a new era of sustainable and exciting motorcycle racing, and as we have always done, we now aim to test ourselves against new challenges."

Domenicali stated in public statements that Ducati will use the MotoE paddock experience to develop production motorcycles. In a press release, Ducati stated that its "goal is to study how to produce a sporty, light, thrilling and well-suited to all enthusiasts electric vehicle as soon as the technology is available."

Electric motorcycles and automobiles are viewed by many as a foregone conclusion, but Ducati's involvement in MotoE and its statements about production motorcycles can be seen as its first significant commitment to an electric motorcycle line. We don't know when we can expect electric Ducatis to hit dealers, however.

While Ducati does not sell electric motorcycles, the brand has partnered with Thok E-Bikes to create a range of pedal-assist e-bikes, demonstrating interest in the electric segment. Ducati's parent company, the Volkswagen Group, also manufactures a range of electric automobiles, such as the Audi e-tron line and the VW ID.4.

"We are very proud of this agreement because," Domenicali said, "it represents a historic moment for us.". Whenever Ducati ventures into a new world, it does so to create the best possible product. The agreement is timely for Ducati, which has been studying the situation of electric powertrains for years, since it allows us to experiment in a well-known and controlled environment such as racing."

We will work to make high-performance, lightweight electric bikes available to all participants of the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup. "Weight, a fundamental element of sports bikes, is where the greatest challenge lies." Domenicali added. Lightness has always been in Ducati's DNA, and thanks to the technology and chemistry of batteries that are advancing rapidly, we are confident that an excellent result can be achieved. Our innovations and futuristic technological solutions are tested on circuits around the globe before we make exciting and desirable products available to Ducatisti. Once again, I am convinced that we will be able to take the experiences we have gained from the world of racing competition and apply them to production bikes."

Ezpeleta also discussed Ducati's entry into electric motorcycle racing: "We are very proud to announce Ducati as the new, exclusive manufacturer of the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup.". : "With their stellar racing history, it is an honor to welcome one of the best-known manufacturers to this partnership.". We are eager to watch the future develop and grow, as the MotoGP paddock and MotoE continue to drive innovation and evolution in the motorcycling industry - all the while creating an amazing on-track spectacle.".

Pons Racing 40's Jorge Torres won the 2021 MotoE World Cup title after a tight battle with Dynavolt Intact GP's Dominique Aegerter. This was Torres' second consecutive MotoE championship.
