RETRO-STYLE’ HARLEY-DAVIDSON TEASED AS FIRST MODEL IN HERO TIE-UP

The first Harley-Davidson - Hero MotoCorp product will be a mid-capacity roadster with a retro-style.

The result of Harley-Davidson's tie-up with Indian giant Hero MotoCorp will be a new 'retro-style' Harley-Davidson-badged motorcycle, it has been revealed. An as-yet-unseen model is expected to be a mid-range roadster aimed at Asian markets, although it may also make its way over to Europe to expand the firm's range.

According to Indian website RushLane, the model was announced as part of an investor call, with Hero CFO Niranjan Gupta saying plans are well underway to use the tie-up between the two motorcycle giants.

Hero MotorCorp is little-known in Europe, but it enjoys a huge market share in Asia, and it claims to be the biggest motorcycle manufacturer in the world in terms of sales, albeit with models at the lower end of the engine spectrum.

Harley-Davidson decided to end distribution and production in India after only 11 years amid disappointing sales and high overheads, prompting the tie-in with the company. It instead signed a multi-faceted agreement with Hero MotorCorp to handle distribution and sales of imported models, while utilizing its manufacturing capabilities to create new, more cost-effective models.

Hero MotorCorp will work with Harley-Davidson to develop its own line of bigger, premium models to compete with Bajaj, which is developing its own range of models with Triumph.

What about the Harley-Davidson 338R?

There has been no news on the Harley-Davidson 338R, a small capacity roadster built in conjunction with Chinese firm QJ Motors that shares its underpinnings with the Benelli 302R.

Despite a seemingly finished version spied back in 2019, Harley-Davidson's 338R slipped off the radar amid a management shake-up. Jochen Zeitz, the company's new CEO at the time, mentioned taking the brand back to its core demographic of cruisers, suggesting the 338R wasn't the right fit for the brand at the time.

However, Harley-Davidson misses out on a lucrative market in Asia, where its larger models command a premium over locally made models. Former US President Donald Trump - who touted Harley-Davidson as the quintessential American brand when he first took office - sparked a global price war with China, one that led to prices soar.

The former President didn't hold back when Harley-Davidson responded by increasing production in Thailand by shaming the firm publicly.

Hero MotoCorp's new relationship helps circumvent many of its issues by removing the overhead of its plants, entrusting production legwork to its partner, while creating new models that don't dilute the brand badge engineering.
